🛒 Ingredients
A few notes about the ingredients:
- Chex - Honey nut Chex is my favorite because it's slightly sweet, but you can also use regular Chex for a slightly less sweet trail mix.
- Pretzels - Any small, bite-sized salty pretzels will work well in this Halloween Trail Mix, including the classic mini pretzel twists.
- Kettle corn - The perfect combination of sweet and salty brings all of the flavors in this Halloween Chex mix recipe together.
- Salted cashews - Adds savory, buttery richness to the mix as well as a nice hearty crunch + some protein!
- Sweet treats - I like to use equal amount of classic candy corn, M&Ms, yogurt covered raisins, and chocolate covered almonds. I used orange and brown M&Ms, but if you can find the Halloween Ghoul's Mix M&Ms, you can use them instead!
⁉️ Substitutions and Alterations
- Chex alternatives - If Chex cereal isn't an option, you can replace it with Honey Nut Cheerios.
- Pretzel alternatives - Switch it up from the classic pretzel and use pretzel sticks, pretzel nuggets, or even pretzel crisps for an extra crunch.
- Kettle corn substitutions - Caramel corn is the next best option. Or, you can try plain popcorn or lightly buttered popcorn instead.
- Cashew substitutions - Any other salted nuts such as almonds, peanuts, pecans, or pistachios will all add a nice savory crunch.
- Sweet treats - Don't be afraid to replace the recommended sweets with your favorite Halloween candy. Things like mini marshmallows, mini peanut butter cups, semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, Reese's pieces, dried fruits, candy pumpkins, or chocolate covered nuts will all work.
📓 Instructions
- Mix ingredients together. Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl, then carefully mix everything together without crushing the pretzels, Chex, and popcorn.
- Top with additional sweets. Add in additional candy corn, m&ms, and raisins and serve!
❄️ How to Store
All of the ingredients in this spooky snack mix are safe to be stored at room temperature.
Once mixed together, store the trail mix in an airtight container such as a zip top bag or plastic container for up to 5 days. Over time, some of the ingredients, like the popcorn or Chex, will go stale and that's when you'll know it's time to discard.
🔍 Recipe FAQs
You can absolutely make Halloween trail mix in advance! This is a great way to prepare for your Halloween festivities and spend the time closer to the event prepping time-sensitive recipes like Mummy Meatloaf!
If mixing in advance, make sure to store tightly in an airtight container or it will go stale quickly.
I wouldn't recommend adding non-edible spooky shapes or decorations into the bowl of trail mix as they could accidentally be eaten. However, if you find edible shapes and decorations, feel free to add them.
For other festive ideas, serve the Halloween mix in a Halloween-themed bowl with large spooky skeleton hands and additional decorations around the bowl!
This trail mix is one of my favorite Halloween snack mixes to share with loved ones during the spooky season.
If packaging it up to share with kids for Halloween parties, I'd recommend filling cellophane bags (clear or Halloween themed) and tying them with orange or black ribbons with a Halloween-themed gift tag attached.
If sharing with adults, I'd package them up in a glass mason jar with orange or black ribbons wrapped around the top of the jar and attach a Halloween-themed gift tag.
It is possible to include homemade treats in Halloween mix, but do so with caution.
Perishable treats, for example, won't hold up well in this trail mix and will cause it to turn stale significantly faster. However, if you've made homemade kettle corn or homemade roasted cashews, that would work very well!
💭 One More Tip
If switching up the add-ins, keep the measurements the same! For instance, if you choose to replace the salted cashews with another nut or other favorite ingredients, try to use around 1 cup. If you use more or less, the Halloween party snack mix won't be as well-balanced.
